Hotlinking

image from FacebookThis image is hosted not on this website, but on Newtricks' Facebook page (www.facebook.com/newtricksdotco). We've 'hotlinked' it by right-clicking on the image and grabbing the URL ("copy link location").

Hotlinking is generally not the done thing. Showing images from someone else's website is actually stealing their bandwidth. However Facebook appears not to mind. Many social media sites implicitly or explicitly encourage hotlinking. Others, such as Flickr, have specific policies.

But don't go grabbing images from other people's websites. As mentioned above, it's unethical, and you might well get caught when someone checks their backlinks.
