Social media moves East

The next big players in social media are unlikely to come from the Western world. In Asia, instant messaging platforms, 'chat apps' are growing phenomenally fast. Line, a Japanese app, is targeting users in the US, following the now traditional path of reaching for users rather than income. The president of NHN Japan, which owns Line, said, “We want to spread throughout the world at any cost.”

Chat app 'line'One of the features of this new generation of social media is a move away from simple text to images: sophisticated emoticons or 'stickers'. Line, for instance, makes some income from selling stickers to users for a couple of dollars.

Other Asian apps include KakaoTalk from Singapore and China's WeChat.

Pinterest update

Pinterest screen shotPinterest is expanding. You can now register as a business, which gives you additional options, and it's still free.

There are two ways of setting up a business account: you can convert your existing account (useful if it's already established and about your business), or start a new one from scratch. There are new terms and conditions to sign, and, at the time of writing, you have to follow five other pinners to get started.

At present there appear to be no plans to charge, but Pinterest is going to have to start earning at some point.

Every so often someone has a simple but brilliant idea, and everyone else thinks why didn't I think of that.

Pinterest is currently the fastest growing social media platform. It's founded on images. Basically you pin a picture to your board, and people can like, or repin, follow you, or go to any linked site.

Your pins can be organised by categories or boards. It's worth thinking carefully about the names of these, as they form one of the basic ways of searching within Pinterest.

You can create a virtual shop-window using Pinterest. Interesting content will get likes and repins. Popular users gain followers and can get huge exposure.

Sony decided that Pinterest was worth investigating. To their surprise, Sony products were already featured, placed there by fans and users of their products. So they did the research, found out what search queries were being used, and what images were most popular, then created their own pages. They are now among the most successful users of Pinterest.

The Social Media Jungle Out There

Dollar buttonSocial Media is a shifting kaleidoscope of logos, colours and sites, all vying for our attention. Nothing is stable in this online world. Ten years ago Facebook didn't exist, Yahoo was still a major search engine, and Linkedin was about to launch. Today we tend to see Google, Linkedin and Facebook as fixtures. But consumers of their products are just as fickle as ever they were. It's easy to create an account with one of Facebook's rivals, "just to see". If enough people do that, the rival quickly gains market share. Myspace suffered that fate. It was launched just a year before Facebook, and at one time had more visitors than Google. Now it ranks more than one hundred places lower and continues to sink. Google itself is striving to move into Facebook's territory, with Google+ gradually gaining adherents.

Talking to the Fridge

Do you remember when scientists were saying that before long all domestic appliances would be interconnected and intelligent? You would be able to phone home and tell your oven to have dinner ready for your evening return; your fridge would tell you when the milk was running low.

Technology like this requires 'industry standards', where different devices can share the same technology so that they are able to talk to each other.

Nowhere is this more important than in the field of communication devices. Many of us take it for granted that we can read our emails on the home Windows pc, on the works Mac, and on our phone, and swap files between them.
